 First off,  which pump is humming?  Some of these cars had dual fuel-pumps.  One pump is in the tank, and one pump is external and right in front of the left rear tire.  These cars are notorious for loud pumps, but I'm assuming you are talking about the in-tank pump.  My '87 convertible also had a whine/whizzing noise it made, but it wasnt unbearable.  You actually had to listen for it.

 The only thing I can tell you is to maybe try another pump, or pull up the rear seat and put some sort of insulation around the inspection lid.  This should definately quiet things down.
