BMW Repair: 2000 BMW 528i Transmission, gm version, bmw 528i

Question
Hello,
I have a 2000 528i with 121k on it. Just bought the car, so don't know the complete history. Both the check engine and the transmission warning lights are on. I've read through your previous answers, so know it "might" be the battery, but my question is this: Is it a "feature" of BMW transmissions to downshift a bit rougher (harder, with a jolt) than other makes? I cam from a Mercedes and this is my first BMW. It certainly slows me down in a hurry when travelling fast, but at slower speeds it is more annoying.

Thanks!
Kevin

Answer
Kevin, harsh downshifting is not characteristic of our transmissions. I believe we use the same vendors for our transmission that Mercedes uses, but I'm not positive on that. Needless to say that they aren't manufactured by BMW. If is either a GM trans or a ZF (german make) transmission. Do you have the five speed or four speed automatic. Secondly is it the GM Version or the ZF version. You will see it toward the rear of the trans, usually on the side. Are there any check engine lights or Gear lights on the dash?
