BMW Repair: bmw 540i 1999 transmission failure, triangle symbol, bmw 540i

Question
I was driving my 1999 540i and the battery light came on.  It came on earlier in the day (2:00pm) and I planned to address it the next day.  The same day in the evening at 8:30pm while driving home, the brake, abs, and triangle symbol, check engine lights all came on. The next thing, I couldn't accelerate up hill, then the Transmission failsafe control message came on.  The car stop.   There are/were no indications that the transmission was having problems.  Any ideas what's going on?  the vin # is gm60470. I am hoping it is not going to cost me a fortunate to fix.  Thanks for any help anyone can give.

Answer
Veronica, Trans. control module is the most sensitive to under voltages. I would have the battery and alternator checked out. You have a water cooled alternator (you heard right) and it is expensive to replace. You will need to clear the car's fault memory with a scan tool.
