BMW Repair: E46 Steering problem, power steering pump, abnormal sound

Question
Hi Evan,

I'm driving a 1999 320i 6 cyclinder E46.(vin:FN04428) Few days ago had a problem with the steering.

During engine idle, there seems to be an abnormal sound like groaning sound. When I turn the steering wheel left or right, it became much more louder. Drove it slowly and tried to turn the steering wheel left or right, the same thing.

Could it be the:-
i.   steering rack
ii.  power steering pump
iii. bearing associated with the steering mechanisms

I really appreciate your help. Thank you one again.

Answer
Ariff, does the sound come from the interior or the exterior. In the column or the engine bay? Please check your power steering fluid resevoir for proper level. The fluid should be at the bottom mark on the cap stick when cold and at the top when hot. If the level is low then most likely some of the lines are leaking. What you are describing to me is the power steering pump running dry. Don't allow this to go on for too long or you'll damage the pump. System should have red ATF fluid.
