BMW Repair: climate control heats on one side only, climate control, switch assembly

Question
hi ya , i have a 'm reg' 320se automatic . the problem i have is when i turn the heat on (hot cold dial near centre vent)the heat only come out from the passenger side .
i have the climate control where you have 2 turn dials one for each side on the panel above the radio ,like i said the passenger side will go hot and cold by turning the dial but the drivers side stays cold where ever the dial is set. not sure if the switch has broken or maybe if the 2 side are controled by different water supplys .is there any way to test the dial ? any advice would be helpful  thanks gavin

Answer
Hi Gavin,
You failed to mention the year of the car. But the heated water supply is the same for both sides so forget this angle.
And there are 2 possibilities:
a) the stepper motor controlling the heat/cold vent
setting in the driver side is faulty
b) or, the switch itself is bad.
Anytime of the day, I would say replace the switch assembly.
