BMW Repair: crankshaft position sensor replacement, crankshaft position sensor, accurate diagnosis

Question
My daughter has a 1998 328i ( VIN WBACD432XWAV60145) that exhibits a timing issue symptom when engaging the starter (sounds as if the engine is out of time).  I attempted to check the fault codes and had to make several attempts before I finally got the scan instrument to read.  Codes as follows: P1250, P0305, P0335, P0125, and P0335 P.  I decided to replace the crankshft position sensor (2 of the codes implicated it).  First, does this seem to be an accurate diagnosis, and second; this sensor appears to be "buried" down near the bell housing, what's the best method of replacing this?  Thanks for any advice.

Answer
Hi Ronnie,
You are absolutely right about your decision to replace the crankshaft position sensor. If it gives no signal, it is a wonder that it is still running. But first be sure that it is not a wiring problem by checking the connector and wires to it. If OK, replace it, clear faults, roadtest and re-check for whatever faults come back (then tell me what you get).
The sensor is right beneath the starter so there is no other way than to get it from beneath the car (by raising it or going under the car). Of course you have to remove whatever lower engine covers you still have in your car.
