Answer
Hello Kevin,
I think you have a problem related to EWS (drive-away protection control module). And no, it is not a common problem at least that I know of.
As you may already know, the ignition key is read /verified by the coil in the keyhole, which sends a signal to the EWS, which when it confirms that the key is authentic (with its rolling code system of verification) then sends a start signal to the starter solenoid, simultaneously the EWS sends a signal to the DME (again based on the rolling code system)
which when it sees the right code then arms the fuel pump and the ignition system.
So if the starter does not crank with key but cranks when jumped, then  the start-up signal from the EWS is not there.
Check fuses #25 5A (connects to EWS pin 10), F44 5A (connects to pin 11) and F114 50A (connects to pin 2). If OK, then check for 12 v signal at EWS pin 1 when key is turned to start, also remove connector to EWS and check for continuity from pin#1 to solenoid. You may also check for fuel pump activation at key on
(only for a few seconds at least), since if the EWS is signalling the DME properly, then the DME should activate the fuel pump.
I guess you would find your problem with the above data.
If you think it is a bad EWS, try checking the connectors
first for corrosion, etc. And if you have to replace it, you
need a GT1 or DIS (I have not tried using any of the available non-factory coding/programming products). The old EWS data has to be read out first before transferring it to the new one and subsequently coding/programming it.
You can not use any EWS from another vehicle because it is vehicle specific (coded and mated to the DME for good). You can only use a new EWS to replace an existing one.)
Cheers!
