BMW Repair: convertible top, soft tops, storage compartment

Question
My 992 bmw convertible top seems to work 3/4 of the way then the back cover start to close before the top is all the way down.  What it the history of the electric tops for this year and if you make them manual, will the back cover close tight? How would one open the cover if manual

Answer
Hi Kathy,
Electric soft top problems are always difficult to fix no matter what year. There are sensors, motors, pumps, locks, etc. that have to work in unison for fault-free operation.
This problem should be diagnosed with a BMW scanner/computer, anything less will not work. But I think
It may not be worth your while to have it converted from electric to manual(although I see no reason why it can not be done by somebody who is intelligent enough). Even without conversion, you can stow your top manually thru the use of the emergency mechanism in the rear seat. Release the storage compartment cover lock, pull up the cover, then stow the canvas, and close the cover. I think the left and right locks will hold the cover closed properly.
Try to lock it yourself manually and see if it does. The locks for manual and electric soft tops have different part numbers but it may have a bearing only on the way it is unlocked.
