BMW Repair: EML/DSE, electronic gizmo, preferred shop

Question
This morning I experienced the EML and DSE lights turning on and staying on and the car would not go more than 30mph. I had someone take me where I needed to go and when I got back home and started my car it was back to normal except now the check engine light is on. I really want to take it to a dealer near home, but I don't like their service. I was wondering, since its fine now, if I can drive it up to 120 miles to go to another BMW dealer that If love? Would it be safe or just go to the nearest one?

Answer
Tanya,
That's a tough call.  What happened was some sensor or electronic gizmo malfunctioned on the car, causing the EML/DSE lights to come on.  Once you stopped the car and let it sit, the computer noted the problem and stored it as a "fault code" causing the check engine light to come on.  Now that the check engine light is on the dealership technician can plug his scanner into your cars computer and see what fault code was stored.  The question is what is wrong with your car?  If its something minor like a knock sensor then I would be OK to drive to your favorite dealer, if its something more serious then you should have it fixed, no matter what.
I understand the problems with dealerships, I'm not a fan either.  I would look on the Internet or Yellowpages for a Mechanic that specializes in German Cars.  That way maybe he's closer and he could at least tell you what the fault code is.  Then if you need it fixed immediately he could do it, or you could take it to the local dealership.  If it's nothing too serious... take it to your preferred shop.

In summary, only you can make that decision.  But most mechanics will at least tell you what the fault code is for nothing, or a few dollars.  By your name Tanya, I'm assuming you are a female.  Sometimes (rarely) mechanics will prey on unknowing females to pay for things that dont need replacement.  If something looks funny, it probably is... get a second oppinion.

If I can help you out any further, please dont hesitate.
 Good luck,
 Josh
