BMW Repair: 2002 530I, throttle position sensor, intermittent problem

Question
Hi, My 530 has an intermittent problem. Sometimes when the car is run hard or its a hot day the engine failsafe program comes on. The code says throttle position sensor faulty/or below something. My question is pretty lame 1. Where is the TPS unit and can I replace it my self. 2. Is this really the problem or could there be some other deamen to find. Thanks for being here for us numbskulls.

Answer
Doug, TPS is part of the Electric throttle body assembly (EDK). What is the "P" code exactly? I also need the last seven digits of the VIN to run the code. Usually this is a fault throttle body unit. If you replace the unit check the throttle boot for tears. Also remove the aluminum idle valve and clean out with solvent or brake/throttle cleaner. After the throttle replacement turn the key on for 15 seconds and then off for 15 sec. then you can start the engine.
