BMW Repair: 2001 bmw x5, aluminum valve, vacuum hose

Question
Hi. I recently purchased a bmw x5 4.4i, 2001. The service engine soon light is now on. The code as read by an auto zone tech. reads: air assist control valve range/performance. If you have any information that may help me I would surely appreciate it.  Thank you.   Mark

Answer
Mark, I am not quite sure what is meant by Air assist control valve. If it is referring to the secondary air valve then check the vacuum hose that goes to the valve. Sorry, left side of the motor when facing it is a round aluminum valve that bolts to a long aluminum tube that crosses from one engine bank to the other across the front of the motor by the water pump. That valve will have a little vacuum hose  that actuates it. Make sure that hose is good and not cracked or broken. If this hose is good then you need to have the car diagnosed professionally. Dealership is preferable if you have the funds.
