BMW Repair: convertable top jam, hall sensors, top jam

Question
I have a 2000 323ci with an automatic convertable top, when I was putting the top down the back lid would not open and I had to manually release the top and was unable to open the lid manually and had to close the top manually as well.  What would cause the lid not to release and does the dealer have to reset the release button.

Answer
Chris a number of things can cause the storage lid not to open. For instance the trunk being open, faulty hall sensors in the latches, or a faulty outside temperature sensor, maybe the rear bow below the glass wasn't quite up to 90 degrees (vertical)to start to open the lid. Use the hex wrench in the tool kit to turn the motor assembly for the locks under the rear seat by the button you pressed to release the latches. It only needs to turn 180 degrees if I remember correctly.
