BMW Repair: 2001 330i engine (M54), true bmw, remanufactured engine

Question
Dear Evan,

I just had a remanufactured engine put in our 330i.  I know the  2001 to 2005 M54 are basically the same engine.  Anyway.the mechanic we used put in a 2005 engine (at least that is what the sticker under the hood says, the one they check for smog purposes).  My question is two part:  Where do these engines come from and how reliable are they.   He says there is a warranty on the engine...I believe two years, however he only will warranty their work for 12,000 miles or 6 months I believe.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
David did you use an engine from BMW or did you use another source for the engine (wrecking yard)? If it is a true BMW remanufactured engine then it comes with a two year parts warranty (parts defects). Your mechanic is only warranting the Labor for 12,000 miles or 6months. If the dealer would have installed the engine then the labor would have been paid for in the event of a parts failure within the two year parts warranty. What sticker is under the hood? Engines are remanufactured in Germany (the mother land) in BMW facilities if the engine is infact a factory replacement part. They are as good as a new engine because they are completely rebuilt. Hope this answers some of your questions.
