BMW Repair: code 1510, mass airflow sensor, fuel mix


Question
i am having code 1510 I thank it is idle speed
control, can it be cleaned or just replaced
am i on the right track?

Kelly, you can remove and clean the Idle valve with solvent. If you have the valve in hand and rapidly twist you wrist you should hear the door clicking at the end stops because it is free to move. If the door in the idle valve is stuck you will hear nothing. Check the Intake boot at the bend to the idle valve for cracking or tears. Clean the throttle body while there. Oddly enough I have never seen an idle valve go bad electrically just carboned up and siezed. Safe way to go would be to replace the valve but I think they are $150.00 plus. I have had success cleaning them, but I don't ever see the cars back so I don't know how long it lasts. Your choice. I also have never seen an Idle valve cause a fault for itself. It usually has something to do with a Mass Airflow sensor or other air/fuel mix issues. But It is worth a try if you are doing the work yourself.
