BMW Repair: Possible Engine Damage??, bmw 323 ci, 2000 bmw 323

Question
Hi Don,
I own a 2000 BMW 323 CI with 116k miles. My problem is that I think my engine may have been damaged due to low oil level.  I had an oil change done last Friday. I was driving it yesterday and I noticed an oil-burning smell and a clicking noise. I opened the hutch and there was oil all over the place which it was leaking ( I found later) from the oil filter.   I checked the oil stick and it was below the min mark.  I added oil and went back to the shop.  After checking it, they told me that the new ring or seal for oil filter they used was bad. They replaced the filter, etc and cleaned the oil at not charge. My question to you is, should not the shop run the engine to make sure there is not any leakage after an oil change? how can I check if the engine was damaged?  I do not know if I am too sentitive now to all the noises, but I seem to hear a settled noise when driving that I was not listening before.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Regards,

Lourdes

Answer
I am sorry to hear of such an error. They blamed it on a seal but I would put it more on the technicians flat rate.It should be run as that is why you would do it so as to find any MISTAKES.Assuming you weren't gong down the highway and lost all of the oil it may have just taken some time off the car.If the oil pressure is still as it should be and the noises aren't totally loud it may be alright.I woulsd have theoil pressure checked.
Find a good place for service as I know you will hear every noise that could be heard due to this instance.I'm sorry but be strong its a BMW
