Evan,

I own a 2000 323i.  Wife started drove it this afternoon with no problems.  Went to start the car this evening and I have power, it just won't start.  It clicks three times, including headlights, and then nothing.  Would this be a starter issue or is it possible that my water pump is causing the problem? (I am having water pump replaced this week)

Thanks Drew

Answer -
Drew, clicking is due to insuffcient battery voltage. The solenoid is trying to move the starter drive into engaging Flexplate teeth, but it doesn't have enough 'juice' to turn the motor over. Have the battery checked or jump the car from the under hood jumper posts. Check the year stamp on the negative battery terminal post. Also have the        Map-thermostat and radiator cap replaced when you do the Water pump (if you haven't replaced them recently). Make sure the charging system is charging the battery properly (alternator).

Evan,

I heard jumping a BMW can somtimes do a lot of harm.? Where is the battery located?  Do you think a new battery would fix the issue?

Answer
Drew, battery is in the right rear of the trunk. Use the underhood jumping post if you are going to jump it. I wouldn't worry about damaging the car's solid state components. I would charge the battery and have it checked. You need to also check the charging system, but you need a good fully charged battery to get an accurate test. What does the year stamp read on the battery?
