BMW Repair: 1984 E30 Electrical Problem, blown fuses, dashboard lights

Question
Fuse 23 (dashboard lights, right side markers, etc.) blows whenever you start the engine and turn on the lights.  If you replace the fuse and turn on the lights with the engine not started, the lights work and the fuse doesn't burn out.  I had a former BMW dealer mechanic trace the wiring looking for a short, but he came up empty.  Any idea what may be the problem?

Thanks

Answer
David,
This is one of those things that has to be sorted out by you.  I do know that the reverse back-up light wiring harness is a common source for blown fuses.  This wiring runs down the side of the transmission and up into the shifter tunnel and through the inner shift boot, into the car.  This wiring can rub on the driveshaft shorting out, or it can rub on the shifter tunnel causing a short.  So you should definately check this.

 Good luck,
 Josh
