BMW Repair: Thump noise, control arm bushing, driveline

Question
Hi Michael,

I have a 1999 328 with an automatic transmission.  The problem is when I'm coming to a complete stop, I hear this soft thump noise coming from the driveline.  Could this be caused by the outer transmission flange?

Thanks,

Bill

Answer
Are you sure the sound is coming from the driveline and not the front control arm bushing?  I can't think what else would make a thump only when stopping.  If the outer transmission flange was bad it would cause more problems than simply a clunk only when stopped, though i have been wrong.  it should be an easy check once your under the car.
