BMW Repair: BMW Ignition, 1995 bmw 325i, bmw 325i

Question
My 1995 BMW 325i sedan will not start.  One of my friends thinks the entire ignition assembly needs to be replaced.  He says this is a coded part.  How much does this normally cost and how much labor is normally involved?

Thanks,

Answer
how was it decided that the ignition assemble needs to be replaced?  have you checked the reference signal or the position sensor itself?  what do you mean by ignition assembly?  the car has an engine computer but it controls more than the igntion.  you can usualy get one for a decent price online or from a site called www.junkyarddog.com.  diagnosis and repair plus cost of parts for a mechanic to do it would run somewhere around $800+ depending on where you live and who you take it to.  if your sure that the ecu/ecm/engine computer is whats to blame you may be able to get one for a couple hundred and do it yourself.
