GMC Repair: rebuild of EBCM necessary?, gmc yukon xl, 2003 gmc yukon xl

Question
Hello,
I have a 2003 GMC Yukon XL.  Around Christmas 2011 I got a "service brake system" warning in the DIC, along with the ABS and e-brake light coming on together.  They stayed on until I turned the car off and back on.  This same thing has happened now another 6-8 times since then.  I took it to the dealership, they read the code as being the brake control module.  Their price is $1230 P&L.

I looked online and there are several places that advertise they will rebuild the EBCM for far less $.  It seems the common failure is some transistor failing that causes the ABS pump to run all the time.

I'm fine with using a rebuilder, but I haven't heard the ABS pump running, and furthermore I would expect the lights to be on constantly if that were the case...but then again I'm always driving when it happens so I'm not sure that I would hear it anyway.

So my question is simply to get your advice...I am an electrical engineer and could probably even make the repair myself if I knew what I was looking for.

Thanks, and please let me know if I can provide more info.
Ben

Answer
Hi
First I would have to know the code to be able to tell if the diagnosis wwas correct.
IF SO and it is the EBCM that needs replacement, and you wanted to repair the circuitry
yourself, I guess it would be how much experience and or knowledge you have on this type
of repair. As would be obvious, I do not have the ability or experience to make repairs
on PCB's. We also do not have access to the PCB schematics. I was under the impression it was a solid state relay that was sticking on, keeping the motor energized.
Either way, I guess worst case you could send it off and have it rebuilt. I also trust rebuilders, especially if they put some sort warranty on their work.
You are more than welcome to keep in touch, and I will assist however possible.
Advise-
The EBCM is held onto the BPMV by (4) T-20 head screws. Make sure you have a good T-20 1/4drive socket, as I have noticed cheap ones "strip out" the screws, and make them quite difficult to remove.
Let me know if I can assist further
