GMC Repair: 2000 GMC Sonoma Wont Turn Over, gmc sonoma, auto world

Question
Hi new to the DYI auto world so bare with me and hopefully i provide enough information. I have a 2000 GMC Sonoma last year was running EXTREMELY rough i didnt have the time or money to work on it so i let it sit for about a year now. Now with more time and money i thought i would jump back into it... Battery Was Dead so i replaced it, tried starting it a half a dozen times and the Starter went out. I opened it up the case has broken in half and way laying in the housing the the flywheel was in... Im going to replace the starter but, at the point ill be back to square one why wont it turn over? I cleaned the intake butterly valve as suggested by a friend of mine and that didnt help. Wondering if an OBDII pocket scanner would be worth the investment to help determine a problem... Any suggestings or tips on what i would look at first would be appreciated sorry for being so long winded just dont want to leave any detail out.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Trobaugh

Answer
The more information you provide the better it is on my end. I have a "pocket scanner". Most of the time that will do the trick. Will the vehicle not turn over? if the engine will crank but not start=turning over. I would replace the fuel filter as well. sitting for a year? I would drain the old fuel and replace it. email me directly once you have the starter replaced and tried to start it. marvin.saunders69@yahoo.com
