GMC Repair: 90 pontiac grand prix problem, camshaft sensor, timing chain cover

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I own a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix LE 3.1L (not 3100) v6 multiport EFI.. Starts and runs great for an hour or more, once it is turned off it will not start for awhile. (sometimes I'll get lucky if I crank it 50 times) Fuel shows 38 p.s.i.. I've replaced the fuel pump/filter/strainer,fuel rail, injectors, throttle body,ICM and coils, fuel pump relay, crank pos.sensor, plugs, and throttle pos.sensor...I also bought a cam pos.sensor, but can't find it on the engine. I bought a Chilton manual and it says it's behind the water pump under the power steering pump.. But it's wrong there is not a sensor in that location.. I'm stumped any insight would be great..Thank you for your time!

ANSWER: Follow the link for the location of the cam sensor:

QUESTION: Vin T.. The diagrams you have provided is the same info provided in Chilton's manual which is not accurate..Could you possibly tell me what would cause these symptoms? Thanks for your time.

Answer
I have read over you question again. 3100 is the same as 3.1L. That is a marketing tool used by GM. Given your problem, and the VIN you provided, I have a feeling that the motor was replaced at some point. Case in point. Pull-a-part here in Oklahoma City will let you pull a complete motor for $175. You can even get a short warranty. That beat the $1500 to have it rebuilt.

Back to your question. The camshaft sensor will be near the upper half or portion of the timing chain cover. That is the only place that it could logically be on a typical 90 degree block. If you have overhead camshafts, it could be elsewhere. If your particular engine has one, it will be in that area. Another problem common with GM. Whether it sounds hokey or not. You should replace your gas cap.
