GMC Repair: Key Stuck in Ignition, spilled liquids, key stuck in ignition

Question
I have a 2004 GMC Envoy with a V6 engine. When I put the car into park, the doors will unlock (the safety feature on the car) but now the key will not come out of the ignition. I have tried everything I can think of. I have had others try to put my car into park thinking it may not be fully in gear, but that did not work either. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi
There is 2 possible causes
1) GM has a service bulletin out for the shifter boot being mispositioned, which in turn does not allow the shifter to be put firmly  into park.
You can pull up on the shifter boot (it just snaps in) ands recheck.
If that does not work out, then in most likelyhood, it is the shifter assembly. The shifter sends a signal to the Steering Wheel Theft Deterrent Lock, which in turn reeases the key.
It COULD also be the Steering Wheel Theft Deterrent Lock, but from my experience, the shifter is the most usual and likely fault (due to spilled liquids, etc...) falling into that area.
Hope this helps
