GMC Repair: GMC Safari Van AWD - Tires, gmc safari, safari van

Question
QUESTION: I have a 95 safari van.
I put some almost new tires on the front 6 months ago
and now I am looking for 2 used tires for the back.
The tire shop says I have been lucky so far, all the tires have to be the same (wear, tread, brand, model) if not the different tires will cause major problems with the AWD transmission. It this true? how similar do the tires need to be?

ANSWER: yes the tires do have to be the same size, not brand but size and that means height too, two tires of the same size can be different heights.  If they are different you will know as the truck will bind very badly when turning.

QUESTION: yes same size as in P215/75R15
but the same amount of tread? which means the very close to the same height (diameter)?
How much difference will affect the AWD?  Like new tires on front and almost worn out tires on the back ?

or does it NOT really affect the AWD as long as the front tires are a pair and the back tires are a pair?

Answer
it will make a difference, the tires need to be very close in size meaning the height, there are tires that are the same size but different height, such as a tire with a 115s on the side wall is shorter than a 119s, if you have completely bald tires on the rear and full tread on the front, it could cause the truck to bind in slow turns.
