GMC Repair: 2001 Olds Aurora V8 CKP sensor, engine oil leaks, crankshaft sensor

Question
My scanner gives me a code P0386 which is either a upper or lower sensor.  How
can you determine which sensor is bad from this code?  Are both sensors the
same?  The location of the bottom sensor is behind the oil filter adapter.  Where
is the upper located and what is the procedure for removal and replacement?

Answer
Hi
P0386 is for CKP sensor B.
Both sensor are located, as you say next to each other behind oil filter adapter. The one your after is the higher one on the engine.
They ARE NOT the same part #.
You need part # 12559529
Here is the EXACT procedure for replacement of sensor(s).

Raise and support the vehicle.
Remove the oil filter adaptor.
Remove the crankshaft sensor electrical connector.
Remove the crankshaft sensor retaining bolt.
Remove the crankshaft sensor.
Installation Procedure
Important: Inspect the crankshaft sensor O-ring for wear or damage. If a problem is found, replace the O-ring.
Lubricate the crankshaft sensor O-ring with clean engine oil.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
Install the crankshaft sensor and the retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolt to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
Install the crankshaft sensor electrical connector.
Install the oil filter adaptor.
Lower the vehicle.
Operate the engine and inspect crankshaft sensor for engine oil leaks.
Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure .

Hope this helps
