GMC Repair: best way(if any) to unbend a tailgate, gmc sierra, salvage yards

i have a 1996 GMC sierra 2500 regular cab with the 8 foot bed.  it used to be a work truck so the tailgate is bent/bowed out about 1.5 to 2 inches and the tailgate will not unlatch on the passenger side without the help of a screwdriver.  is there any way to unbend it or make it so at least my tailgate opens properly?

If the rods inside the gate are NOT bent You can attempt to bend them to suit your particular problem.
I would also advise a new handle that too, will help.
Other than that I would check your local salvage yards for a replacement gate. Should not be too high....
