GMC Repair: BCM, chevrolet monte carlo, chevrolet monte carlo ss

Question
I own a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS.3.8ltr Recently I have been having many issues related to the BCM. The temp gauge reads zero, The A.C. compressor doesnt kick on, security light randomly comes on and sometimes the engine wont crank. I know that these problems all tie into the BCM. I have disconnected the battery and held the terminals together to clear out the codes and this works for about a week then one by one they come back. I know that I will have to replace the BCM, but I want to do it myself to save some money. My question is Should I buy a NEW or USED one and What will I have to do to get it going. I already know where it is and can see where it plugs in. Thank You, James

Answer
Hi
Unless you have a Scan tool with GM TIS2k programming abilities, you'll need to have the BCM reprogrammed at either a dealership and or a repiar shop with reprogramming capibilities.
Here is the EXACT GM replacement and reprogramming procedures, if intrested.

Important:

  •  Read this procedure carefully and completely.

  •  The BCM will not function properly if the Setup New BCM procedure is not performed.

  •  Perform the Programming Theft Deterrent System Components procedure after successfully finishing the Setup New BCM procedure. Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components in Theft Deterrent. If the procedure is not performed after a BCM replacement, the following conditions may occur:

     -  The vehicle will not be protected against theft by the Passlock system.

     -  The engine will not crank or start.

Connect a Scan Tool (Tech 2) to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
Turn the ignition switch on.
Select Diagnostics and input all of the required data when prompted by the Scan Tool (Tech 2).
Select BODY CONTROL MODULE.
Select SPECIAL FUNCTIONS.
Select Setup New BCM.
Note, Input all of the required data when prompted by the scan tool.
Select Setup SDM Part Number in BCM, and follow the onscreen directions.
Select New VIN, and follow the onscreen directions.
Select Option Configuration, and follow the onscreen directions. .
Select Point of Sale, and follow the onscreen directions. .
Exit back to the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu.
When the BCM, VIN, Point of Sale and Option Configuration have been entered, proceed with the Theft Deterrent Re-learn procedure.
If the scan tool displays UNABLE TO PROGRAM BCM. BCM IS SECURED, then the BCM must be replaced and this procedure must be repeated on a new BCM.
NOTE: After the completing the above procedure , personalization of the BCM defaults to default settings. Inform the customer that the personalization settings must be reset.

Programming Theft Deterrent System Components
Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components in Theft Deterrent.

Important
After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis:

Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
Clear all history DTCs.

Hope this helps
