GMC Repair: GMC Vandura starting issues, gmc vandura, neutral safety switch

Question
I Have a 1986 GMC Vandura that usually starts on the second try, occasionally though, on the second try the truck won't turn over at all. The battery is good. It seems like possibly a bed ignition or possibly a neutral safety switch issue?? I try moving through the gears and back to park but still nothing.

Answer
Hi
I would suspect the starter. Given the symptons you state, and just experience. You could easily remove the starter and have it bench tested at a major parts store chain (Autozone, Pepboys, Advanced, NAPA, etc...). It COULD be the ignition electrical switch , mounted on the steering column, way down close to where it passes through the firewall area. Since the starter is an electrical motor, they are more prone to fail.
Hope this helps.
Just advice from experience.
Good Luck
