GMC Repair: Key Problems, saturn dealership, saturn sl1

Question
I have a 2001 Saturn SL1. I have had a problem where I put my key in the ignition and it won't turn. I lock up the steering wheel and I still have to jiggle and shake the steering to get the key to turn to turn on the car. I have no problem turning off and pulling out the key, just turning the key to start the car. What do you think the problem could be because its getting worse and I dont want to be stranded.
Thank you,
Megan

Answer
Hi
I would suggest 2 things I have seen common problems with GM key cylinders.
1) (least expensive) Take your title, regestration and drivers lisence to your Saturn Dealership and have them cut a key FROM THE VIN of the car. You'll need proof of ownership, thats why I say bring paperwork.
If your key is "dull" the points of the key has worn down, the tumblers will go in too far and it almost acts like a different cut key.
Dont take it somewheres and just get a key cut, as this is just a mirror cut and it'll cut dull.
2) It COULD be the ignition key switch itself. If that be the case you'll need to take it somewheres and get the key cylinder replaced and they SHOULD re-key your new switch using the old code.
I hope this helps.
Just advice from experience
Good Luck
