GMC Repair: Prop Shaft Spline Lubrication, grease zerk, rear drive shaft

Question
2000 Chevy Tahoe Z-71 5.7 engine.  (This is the "old" generation style with the 5.7 engine that was built early in the year when the new style had already come out.  I wanted to avoid the piston slap problems that occurred with the first years of 5.3 engines.)  The 2000 Chevy Tahoe was purchased "just like new" after a 4 lease had expired.  It only has 26,400 miles.  (I even took out the extended warranty for peace of mind.)  I have done the last number of oil changes and lubrication maintenance.  (The oil and lube intervals are done according to time and not by miles.)  I was reading where the front prop shaft spline needs lubrication at certain intervals.  I examined it but I cannot see any grease zerk like some other trucks I have owned.  Can you please tell me what I have to do to lubricate the splines.  Thank you for your anticipated answer.

Answer
Hi
There is no zerk for the splines, the prop shaft must be removed and the grease installed into the end of shaft by hand.
GM makes a speacial lube for theis, called "Special Lubricant" It comes in a can, a little bigger than a normal can like canned vegetables come in.
I can post the part # tomarrow, I dont have a can handy here.
It does not take much, just a "finger full".
Dont forget to mark the driveshaft to pinion oreintation before removing shaft.
You can also remove the rear shaft and put a finger full in the rear drive shaft also to help gear lash clunk.
Hope this helps and good luck with your vehicle, sounds like a nice one.
Just advice from experience.
Good Luck
Paul
