GMC Repair: 1997 GMC Suburban -- engine shudder, choking?, fuel system components, california gasoline

Question
Jim,

I have a 1997 GMC Suburban with 110,000 miles.  This model received a recall notice a couple of years ago regarding incompatibility with many California gasoline formulas.  The recall noted a problem with the injection and exhaust valve.  I have had this service done a few times and now use Chevron gas and Techron additive to rectify.  However, the problem now seems to not go away.  When climbing a hill at about 68 mph, the car shifts, then the shudder and choking effect begins.  Just had it in the dealership two days ago.  They said "we think its the exhaust valve and it will be $2500 and 5 days work"  Any advice re this?  Please help.

Answer
I am not very familiar with this, but I wanted to let you know that part of this special policy invloves the replacement of you fuel system components if the issue is not resolved by cleaning. This may be worth looking into, however if your vehicle has low compression or is showing other mechanical concerns it may not help at all. I would see if any parts have been replaced, and if they are going to replaced the parts listed in the special policy.
