GMC Repair: Shaky speedometer, ford escort sw, speedometer needle

Dear Ed,

I hope you can help me, it's not a GMC problem but a Ford and your bio looked best for solving any car problem !

96 Ford Escort sw..The speedometer needle fluctuates wildly at speeds of 50 and up. Makes a noise too. We have installed new speedo cable (and we did grease it) and changed the cluster panel and it still hasn't fixed the problem. The odometer is working  properly. What do we do next?

It sounds like the speedometer gear asm that is located on the transmission housing,follow the cable to the transmission and it should screw onto the housing,removed the housing and inspect the speedo gears for wear,replace them if worn.
