GMC Repair: 1993 GMC Suburban Seatbelt, gmc suburban, gentle motion

Question
Okay, here's a good one.  Last night we offered a ride to one of our son's friends and he somehow tied a knot in the seatbelt.  This is the middle (lap) belt in the second seat of our 1993 GMC suburban and the knot is right at the top where the coupling is.  The belt then retracted leaving only the knot and the coupling exposed. We can't figure out how to release the belt to untie the knot.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Answer
Hi,Cindy

Yes i know the feeling, with that type of belt and ill call a retractor,it has a feature that locks in place when moved outward for childseats,in order to release it needs to be retracted back fully, heres the trick with those and it may take a little work, but grab the metal part of the seatbelt as if you were going to use it,in gentle motion move the belt in then out not fast, basically what you are doing is releasing a cam that locks the belt in place this cam will lock on sudden movement, you'll need to attempt this type of motion with the belt,it will work itself out to the point that you are able to undo the knot, but as the belt is moving outward do not release it or else you'll need to do the proceedure over again,if still it is locked in place you may need to replace the belt, let me know if you need more help,Thanks
