GMC Repair: GMC steering column half-shaft fix, intermediate shaft, gmc sierra

Question
 Hello Ed,

I recently had my 2004 GMC pick-up into the dealer for some noises ,and what felt like something loose in the steering column.
The dealer replaced  seals with a seal kit in the steering half-shaft.  Dealer says this happens on occasion.
The repair was done under warranty, but i have concerns of the future if this happens again, dealer says its possible.  Have you any knowledge of this and what it would cost if i have to pay for it next time?  Any other comments would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Dick

Answer
Hi,Dick

What was acually done was the interm shaft was lubricated with a high pressure grease this is per bulliten 1757365,ive done the same with my 02 GMC sierra p/u and the inlaws 04 Yukon,on my truck it lasted for 10000 miles and the noise returned,i replaced the intermediate shaft to the updated part number,i also did the same on the inlaws 04 Yukon, dealer price on the shaft is 150,at about .5 labor.GM is now again in the process of redesigning the interm steering shaft to elliminate the noise,i would contact GMC and request that the shaft be replaced with the updated part, even if in fact your truck does have the current part number,i would still demand a new one be installed under warranty, only my opinion,if you need more help let me know,Thanks
