GMC Repair: GMC Safari 1995 Engine, gmc safari, tow service

Question
A few weeks ago I got in my Safari to run an errand.  The van had been sitting for awhile, so the engine was cold.  The car started up fine.  I backed it out the drive way.  By the time the car got to the street it died.  I tried to restart the car.  The engine would try to crank up but would not completely kick over.  Then it started just winding when I tried to crank it.  I called AAA who tried to crank it again, this time it did not say anything.  The lights worked, so it was not the battery.  AAA took the car to an auto repair only a few blocks from the house.  They said the engine was frozen.  I told them the car was cold when I started it.  They said it did not matter.  The engine had oil but an oil change was over due.  They said the engine locked because I did not get my oil changes.  They said GMC motors are sensitive.  They took the belt off the engine (which was lying in the front seat) and according to the mechanic tried to turn the engine by hand they couldn't turn it.  He said this was indication that it was locked.  He wanted to do install a rebuilt engine.  I did not have the money so I had AAA to come back and take it home.  The Tow Service guy (who was the owner of the two services) was telling me on our way back home that GMC's engines are like that.  He said he did oil changes on all his trucks and the GMC's engine would still lock up.  Presently my van is sitting there.  I am not sure what to do or who to believe.  The engine belt is still sitting on the car seat.
