I have a 1997 GMC Sierra 1500 I have scanned the codes it tells me that the camshaft positioning sensor is bad. I replaced it with one from a local parts store. The code was still present. I was told that I should replace it with a dealer part. so I did. The code came right back. What else could the problem be? thanks for any help. Aaron

Did you TEST the electrical circuits to the cam sensor BEFORE you installed a NEW ONE ?.
You NEVER EVER replace an electrical component ntil you find the EXACT cause of the failure.
Let's say that one of the reference wires from the camshaft sensor back to the computer or a supply wire from the computer to the cam shaft sensor is shorted out causing your CODE to appear. You install a new component and you can FRY the internal electronics of the component thus destroying it.
This MAY or may NOT be your case.
There is also a possibility that your are not getting a reference signal from the computer due to an internal computer component fault.
EXAMPLE: The light bulb in your bedroom is not working. Without performing some BASIC thought, you replace the light bulb and it still does not work.
WHY ?. You forgot to turn on the light switch (computer signal) on the wall.
See what I am getting at ?.
NOTE: IF the tests reveal a computer or wiring fault it is POSSIBLE that you fried both new cam sensors.

AnswerYou need to have the manufacturers SERVICE MANUAL diagnostic procedures and electrical schematics in order to test the fault.
Do NOT purchase a HAYNES, CHILTONS, MOTORS MANUAL and or any GENERIC book, as they do NOT provide specific accurate diagnostic test procedures and you will only be wasting your money.
What engine size is in this vehicle as I might have the information that you need and can e-mail it to you.
