GMC Repair: A/C, r 134 freon, r 12 freon

Question
I own a 1993 chevy cheyenne and I know it is not GMC but I can never get to ask a question on the chevy side of this website. So maybe you can help me out.  Here is my questions.  I just replaced the A/C compressor in my truck.  It has all been converted to r-134a.  After changing the compressor I began to recharge the system.  As I was recharging the system the compressor started to kick on and off like it is supposed to.  Then the compressor stopped turning on and off and would not come on again.  I took it to a buddy of mine who is in home A/C repair and he checked the system.  He told me that the system only had pressurized air.  He tried to recharge the system again.  The only charge it would hold was pressurized air, no freon.  I need to know if the compressor is bad or is there a problem with in the system. The compressor in it is new only a couple of days old and it only came on three times and only for a few seconds.  Thanks for the help.

Answer
You need to evacuate all of the AIR from the system using a vacuum pump BEFOR you charge it with freon.

Here is the procedure for converting from an R-12 system to an R-134 system.

1. Purchase a CONVERSION kit from any parts store and also purchase an additional 3 cans of freon.

2. Purge the R-12 freon from the system.

3. Add the FREON OIL in the amount as stated within the directives on the conversion kit.

4. Using a VACUUM PUMP evacuate ALL the ATMOSPHERIC AIR from the system.

5. Add the EXACT amount of R-134 freon as per the directives on the conversion kit.
