GMC Repair: transmission, transmission work, kick down

Question
I have a 89 chev celebrity.It does not want to shift down to a lower gear exiting off the hwy always dies.It does have auto trans.I bought it apr.1st dont know history.The kick down cable moves freely.I don't see anything out of place.                                                                             yours truely

Are you having ANY abnormal UPSHIFTS and is the OVER DRIVE system operative ?.

Does it appear that there has been any engine or transmission work performed on the vehicle. ?

Does the transmission fluid appear to be discolored or have a burnt smell to it ?. Is the transmission at the FULL mark or is the fluid level LOW ?.
