GMC Repair: how to cure fluctuating needle on GM vehicle, chevy silvarado, engine oil pressure

Question
my daughter's 90 chevy lumina has an oil guage and it is not reading correctly. How do these gauges work? Pls advise.

On a slightly different note, my chevy silvarado oil guage needle started acting irratic today.

What a coincidence.

What is the best way to determine the problems in both of these cases.

thanks

Answer
You have 4 possibilities:

1. Engine oil pressure problems such as low oil pressure or a faulty oil pump or pressure regulator.

2. A faulty irratic oil pressure SENDING UNIT on the engine that needs to be replaced.

3. A faulty dash gage.

4. a fault in the wiring from the oil pressure sending unit to the dash gage.

you need to TEST these areas for a proper diagnosis.

Most likely you have a fault with # 2.
