GMC Repair: Engine idle, pontiac trans sport, mass air flow sensor

Question
-------------------------
Followup To No problems with any thing that would cause this. It has ran great all along.
Question -
I have a 95 Pontiac Trans Sport 3.1 engine.
It idles fine most of the time. But on occasion
it jumps to 1500 rpms to 200 rpms and wants to die out. I put it in neutral give it gas for a second and it is fine. I ask a repair man and he said it can't be idled up because it is set at the factory. He said it can't be adjusted. Can you tell me what the problem might be so I can have it corrected? It idles at about 800 rpms when it runs right. I just need to know what to tell the repair guy what to replace or fix.
Any help would be great. Thanks

If this REPAIR GUY has NO CLUE as to what is causing your problem, PLEASE, PLEASE do NOT let him adjust ANYTHING that I give you the information for.

First a question: What mechanical work has been performed on the vehicle recently ?. As most problems that occur after a recent repair was made can be traced back to the area of where the repair was made.

Answer
There are several PROBLEM areas that need to be looked at and or tested of which are normal occurances.

1. There was a problem with your year vehicle which involves the :

1. MAF sensor (Mass Air Flow) sensor which will require EXPERT testing and most likely replacement.

2. There is a normal BLACK GUMMY RESIDUE that is constantly building up within the THROTTLE PLATE area and the IDLE AIR CONTROL chambers of the intake manifold that simply needs to be cleaned by an EXPERT.

3. Vacuum leaks of anykind from leaking components and or vacuum hoses is also a big problem and these items need to be tested and or replaced.

4. overtime the fuel injectors can become restricted due to normal micro dirt contaminants that get thru the fuel filter.

When was your last MAJOR tune-up ?. Today's vehicles require alot less maintenance than the vehicles of years ago, But they still must be serviced.

Let me know.
