GMC Repair: 97 Buick skylark rack repair, buick skylark, leaks

Question
My mechanic just discovered that the 'rack' on my 97 skylark (V6) wnet out. He is repairing, but I don't really undestand. Can you explain briefly what this means (last front end I worked on was my '57 chevy about 35 years ago). Thanks.

Answer
It depends upon WHAT he is repairing in the rack. If the vehicle is in excess of 60,000 miles, I ALWAYS opt to REPLACE the rack rather then rebuild it. Usually once you have taken one apart, Been there many times, You seem to always have LEAKS of which when you take it back, The mechanic will most likely tell you that he did NOT work on that particular portion of the rack and it will cost you another couple of hundred to get this leak fixed and the cycle goes on and on and on.

I would ask him to install a NEW rack.
