Question -
The car starts and turns off okay, but the shift lever will not move out of Park?

Answer -
Some newer vehicles REQUIRE that you hold your foot on the brake pedal BEFORE you can move the shift lever OUT of park.

Other possibilities that cause this problem is being parked on a VERY STEEP INCLINE and you have to really PULL on the shift lever.

Has there been any recent mechanical work done on the vehicle ?.

We already tried the pushing the brake several times and it is not on an incline.

Could it be something with the key in the steering column?  On another site I saw where it said something about a butoon located under a flap on the bottom of the steering column that allows you to bypass the safety lock system?

The car has not been worked on.

Thanks,
Kent

Is the shift lever on the steering column or on the center console ?.
