GMC Repair: 2000 Grand AM SE, shifting gears, cruise control

Question
Just recently the RPM's will increase from aprox. 1600 to  aprox. 2600 (100 KMH)then back down to 1600 and I have not adjusted my speed. This will also happen when I am driving at slower speeds. I can feel the engine working harder when this happens, it does not stay like this for long, its almost feels like it wants to shift to the lower gear it uses when you pass.  Also if you have the Cruise Control on this will disengage.

It does not happen every time I drive my car but enough that I am concerned that there maybe a problem.

It has been suggested that the transmission fluid may be low but as I have found out there is no where on this engine to check the level, it is a 3.4

Would you have any ideas as to why this is happening?

Answer
Whoever told you that as you stated: " there is no where on this engine to check the level, it is a 3.4

Is someone I would NOT have working on my vehicles. There is ABSOLUTELY a plug that you REMOVE to be sure that the level is adequate.

LOW fluid levels can cause your problem as well as HIGH levels.

You will need to have a set of transmission gages installed on the trans in order to monitor the transmission pressures as the vehicle is shifting gears UP and DOWN.

I have been rebuilding transmissions for over 20 years and NEVER have I run acroos one that you CANNOT check the fluid LEVEL.
