GMC Repair: geo transmission compatibility, geo prizm, salvage yard

Question
Hello,
Thanks for the reply.  I hope that it does not take too much work for the guy who is putting it in for me.  The reason that I am not getting it rebuilt is purely a matter of finance.  The salvaged unit cost $200 and has a 6 month gaurantee...plus $250 to the guy who is putting it in.  Most of the trans shops wanted close to $2000 for the job.  The dealership wanted $3000.  I simply don't have that kind of dough.
The electrical connectors looked similar--what kind of modifications would the installer have to make?
Thanks for your help,
Spencer.

Thank you for considering my problem.
I have a '94 Geo Prizm 1.8L 4 sp auto that needs a new trans due to a bad bearing.  I bought a salvaged tranny from a '96 Geo Prizm 1.8L 4 sp auto.  The connections look like they will hook up, and the salvage yard's computer said that this transmission is compatible, but other places have told me that it is not.  I am paying a guy to put it in, and I would like to know if it will work before he puts it in.
I would appreciate any help you may have to offer.
Thank you.
Answer -
The salvage yards book MAY say it IS compatable.

But, It does NOT say how many modifications it will require in order to make it COMPATABLE for usegae from an 96 model to a 94 model.

There will probably be some barcket and electrical hook-up problems that will require modifications.

I would have to agree with the person who is installing it as he is the one who has to face ALL the probable modifications necessary and this can get very EXPENSIVE time wise.

WHY did you NOT have your trans rebuilt ?.

This is NOT what I would recommend.

Answer
Send your old transmission over to us here in New Mexico, We can do a rebuild on it for $1200 to $1400. We have been doing transmission rebuilds for 20 years.

There may be length differences in the number of splines on the transmission pump. Yours may have 18 and anthe used one may have 20.

There may be 28 splines on the input shaft and yours may have 26.

The electrical plugs may look the same but could be wired DIFFERENTLY inside.

The output shaft splines on yours may have 28 splines and the used one may have 30.

Until he checks all these possibilities and removes the transmission pans on BOTH units to make sure that they are wired the same along with all of the other above said POSSIBILITIES you won't know if it will fit and if it does FIT will the differences inthe internal wiring WORK ?.

You could also have a difference in the speedometer gaer of which could make your speedometer read the incorrect road speed.

ALL of this will take time and money and after he makes all of the possible alterations and goes thru all the work of putting it in the vehicle it may NOT work.

If it does NOT work, YES, You probably CAN take it back and get another transmission but you will NOT be reimbursed the cost of removing this transmission and installing ANOTHER one that MAY or may NOT work.

Your installer is going to charge you for removing your transmission and installing the used transmission.

If he has to remove the used transmission and install a SECOND used transmission, He will charge you AGAIN.

It is UP to you if you want to GAMBLE on a USED transmission.

let me know,
