GMC Repair: electrical problems with a 94 Cutlass sierra s, windshield wipers, wire gage

Question
I have an 94 Cutlass Sierra S. The vehicle suffered some "electrical" damage after the battery sparked out after it touched a part of the frame.
The the only thing that works are the windshield wipers and the fan when I turn on the ignition. I saw several burned wires leading to a few relay switches. Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Sylvester

Answer
ALL vehicles have safety devices called FUSIBLE LINKS.

They are made out of light weight aluminum under a rubbery type covering that is not like your usual plastic covered electrical wires.

When a short occurs this FUSIBLE link MELTS internally and although it looks perfectly fine on the outside, the inside is melted and the FUSIBLE link needs to be replaced with the EXACT same WIRE GAGE as the one that failed. You can usually find these 4 to 6" long FUSIBLE links near the relay centers and at the starter post where the POSITIVE battery cable is attached.

You can use a 12 volt test light and probe each end of the fusible link. It should have battery voltage at BOTH ends.

You may have to unwrap some of the plastic tubing that has numerous wires within the tubing to find the other end of the FUSIBLE LINK(S).

Simply cut them out and solder in a/the new FUSIBLE LINK(S).
