I have a 2000 GMC 2500 4x4 truck with a 6000 series engie. I parked the truck and it was running fine. I went to start it the next day it started like normal but killed . I started it again and it did the same thing after that it would not start.I was low on gas so I put more in but it would not start. The only problem I have had with the truck is the fuel gauge sometimes will go to empty the back to where it was. Is there something I can do.

Using a helper, One of you stand at the gas cap opening with the gas cap OFF.

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position ONLY. Your helper should hear the fuel pump in the fuel tank run for 2 seconds and then stop running, Does it ?.

did you have a HELPER listen at the gas cap opening with the gas cap removed when you turned ON the ignition ?.

If you are ABSOLUTELY POSITIVE that neither one of you heard the fuel pump run for 2 seconds, Repeat this test again 3 more times at 5 minute intervals.

You have to be POSITIVE that you did not hear anything or we will be going down the WRONG path for a PROPER diagnosis.

Go out RIGHT NOW with a helper and REPEAT it 3 times and get right back to me.

Answer
This sounds very much like a failed electric fuel pump in the fuel tank. They are like a light bulb, They worked a minute ago but turn it on again and it is burned out.

If you want we can run a simple test of the 2 second electrical feed wire that goes to the pump to be positive that it is the pump if you would like.

But this type of pump failure is VERY COMMON.

Let me know.
