GMC Repair: VIBRATION, replacing ball joints, lower ball joints

Question
Dear Sir:

I have a 92 GMC full size conversion van, 350, V8, 5.7L, 3/4 ton, G2500 series, 175362 miles.

When I start out driving, even at 35-45 mph, I get this vibration up through my steering wheel.

I can see objects shaking inside the vehicle, the outside mirrors also vibrates.  I have not had any wheel balancing done, driveshaft, u-joints.

The u-joints are about three (3) years old since last changed.  My tires are two years old, purchased new.  I can't figure this one out.  I replaced this engine in October 1995, at 63000 miles, a GM Goodwrench.  The original engine threw a rod, for whatever reason.

Your help will be greatly appreciated, again.

Thanks

Mr. Thomas

Answer
If this IS an ALL-WHEEL drive vehicle the TRANSFER CASE chain is a very likely suspect as it tends to stretch over the miles and years much like a bicycle chain does and you have to keep adjusting it.

Unfortunately the TRANSFER CASE CHAIN is NOT adjustable and must be replaced.

You can remove the TOP filler plug and visually see the chain in the transfer case. If you can push it UPWARD 1/2" or more and also push it DOWNWARD 1/2" or more with your finger, It is worn and requires replacement.

I have heard of people replacing ball joints, shocks, wheel bearings, wheels, tires, all the suspension components, etc, etc. Finally they just happen to live only 150 miles away from me and made the trip out to me and upon driving the vehicle I told thme that I was POSITIVE that it was the transfer case chain and they took it home and after a few days they called and said they had the chain replaced and the vibration was gone.

The TOP 2 possibilities are:

1. Transfer case chain (if applicable to your vehicle).
2. Upper and or lower ball joints.

For and EXACT diagnosis I would need to drive the vehicle.
