Question -
I have replaced my thermostat on my 1994 Buick Roadmaster w/ a 180 (which O'Reillys reccomends). My heater blows cold air unless the car runs for about 1 hour. I took it to the local GM dealer & they couldn't figure anything out except that maybe the thermostat is too cold. Winter is approaching & I have 2 small children. I don't want to replace the thermostat again & waste my $$ if that isn't the problem. My husband also said the A/C compressor kicks off & on when only the heater is on. I realize it will do this w/ the defrost on. I have no idea what that is all about, but it can't be good for the clutch. Please help!!

NEVER EVER deviate from what the manufacturer of the vehicle states as far as replacemnt parts.

Get that 180 degree thermostat OUT of the vehicle and install the CORRECT heat range thermostat.

You CANNOT install a different degree thermostat as you WILL upset the delicate balance of the air/fuel ratio and the driveability of the vehicle.

Today's vehicles are designed to operate at approx 220 degrees.

Once you have installed the CORRECT thermostat, Let me know if you still have a heating problem.

Are BOTH heater hoses HOT to the touch when the engine is at normal operating temperature ?.

What is the past and current repair history of this vehicle ?.

180 degree thermostat (I believe) is what the manufacturer recommends. How do I find out what they recommend other than relying on my local auto parts store. I bought this car used & it did not come w/ a manual. As for the heater hoses, the top one is not getting hot. I spoke to a couple of people & they said it sounded like an air lock. Because of the hose running back to radiator is not getting hot.

Answer
OK, If the parts book say's it is a 180 thermostat then leave it in there. Most computerized vehicles require a 190 degree thermostat.

Without actually having the vehicle to see what the problem is, Are you seeing any coolant flowing thru the radiator with the radiator cap OFF and the engine at a fast idle speed ?.
