Two questions. Our 1988 GMC 4 wheel drive truck has sprung a leak from the oil filter.  My husband changed it twice but both times once we start the engine the oil just poors out of the filter.  We noticed it moved (the filter) slightly when the truck starts.  We are sure we have the correct filter.  1.) What could be causing this?  Someone told us it could be the oil pump that's cause this to happen.  2) Is it true that the engine has to be pulled out to replace the pump on this truck?
Answer -
Exactly where is the leak coming out at ?.

Spoke to my husband and yes they did check the to see if the gasket was left behind and it wasn't.  However, the oil filter that was on the truck when it started leaking was not the one designed/recommended for the truck so he tried both oil filter and both new filters allowed the oil to gush from the threads.  And..  when the started the truck the oil filter cocked from the pressure?  We are also going to check and see if there is some kind of adapter on it that could be causing the problem.  The old oil cooling lines are disconnected but we feel that it wasn't a problem before so it shouldn't matter now. yes?  Could it be the oil pump? Do you have to remove/move the engine to replace the pump?

Clean off the area of where the leak is occurring and have someone watch as you start the truck to see EXACTLY where the leak is coming from.

If you look at a new oil filter you will see a rubber "O" ring where you screw the filter onto the oil filter adapter plate on the engine.

Sometimes when you remove the OLD filter this "O" ring comes OFF of the OLD filter and sticks on the oil filter adapter plate on the engine.

Could this be your problem ?.

Locate the EXACT spot of the leak and let me know.

Answer
OK, Then the THREADS on the adapter plate are most likely stripped. You CAN purchase a new OIL ADAPTER PLATE and it comes with a GASKET to install the adapter plate to the engine.

NO, It is NOT the oil pump.

Yes, You most likely would have to remove the engine to replace the oil pump.
