GMC Repair: 91 GMC Sonoma, gmc sonoma, steering column

Question
I have a '91 GMC Sonoma, 2WD, approx. 130,000 miles.
When I try to start my truck the ey will not turn all the way.  As if the switch is physically stuck.  I can only turn it to the point were the panel lights turn on.  I also can't turn it back, to turn on the radio.  This all started yesterday when I tried to turn the truck off.  It wouldn't turn back!  The key was able to slip out with the truck still on and then I turned it with a lot of force.  I tried a newer key but I get the same result.  Any thoughts on what the problem is.  I've never worked on an ignition switch, but let me know what you think is the problem.

Answer
You stated: "I turned it with a lot of force."  NEVER EVER force ANYTHING.

You have 3 possible problems.

1. The mechanism where you inset the key is damaged and
  needs to be replaced.

2. You BENT the metal rod inside the steering column that
connects the key mechanism to the ELECTRICAL ignition
switch of which is mounted on the steering column under
the dash and needs to be replaced.

3. You damaged the ELECTRICAL ignition switch and needs to
  be replaced.
